Description

Castrol PERFECTO HT 5 Heat Transfer Oil 205L Drum

Product Description

Castrol PERFECTO HT 5 is a high-quality mineral-based heat transfer oil developed for indirect industrial heating and cooling systems. It is manufactured from solvent-refined, high-viscosity-index mineral oil selected for its thermal stability, oxidation resistance and dependable heat-transfer performance.

The product is primarily intended for compatible closed heat transfer systems in which the oil circulates between a heater and process equipment. Heat is transferred through equipment surfaces without the thermal fluid coming into direct contact with the material being heated.

According to the current Castrol Australia product catalogue, PERFECTO HT 5 may be used in properly designed closed systems operating at bulk-fluid temperatures up to 320°C. Castrol also publishes a maximum oil-film temperature of 340°C.

The bulk-fluid temperature represents the general temperature of the circulating oil. The film temperature is the local temperature experienced by the thin layer of oil immediately next to the heater surface. Film temperature can be considerably higher than the measured bulk temperature and must remain within its specified limit.

Maintaining the correct circulation rate is therefore essential. Inadequate flow, heater fouling, poor burner control or operation of the heater without the circulating pump can produce local hot spots and rapidly degrade the oil.

PERFECTO HT 5 has a typical kinematic viscosity of 30.5 mm²/s at 40°C. This relatively low viscosity supports effective circulation, reduced pumping resistance and efficient thermal transfer through compatible industrial systems.

As the fluid reaches operating temperature, its viscosity decreases significantly. This supports the turbulent flow conditions commonly required for effective transfer of heat through process pipework, heater coils and heat exchangers.

The tightly controlled oil specification helps minimise deposits on heater and heat-exchanger surfaces. Deposits can act as insulation, reduce heat-transfer efficiency, increase energy consumption and cause dangerously high local film temperatures.

PERFECTO HT 5 also provides strong resistance to oxidation when used in a correctly designed closed system. Oxidation occurs when hot oil reacts with oxygen, progressively forming acids, varnish, sludge and deposits. Limiting contact between the hot oil and atmospheric air can significantly improve fluid life.

The product may also be used in open systems operating at substantially lower bulk-oil temperatures. Open systems expose a larger area of oil to atmospheric oxygen, increasing the oxidation rate and reducing the fluid’s potential service life.

Castrol also identifies PERFECTO HT 5 as an effective turbine flushing oil because of its solvency and thermal stability. This is a specialised flushing application and does not mean the product should be used as an operating turbine lubricant. Turbine flushing must follow an approved engineering procedure.

The 205-litre drum is suitable for industrial facilities requiring a substantial initial fill, planned fluid replacement or controlled maintenance supply without purchasing a complete 1000-litre IBC. It is appropriate for manufacturing plants, process-heating installations, industrial laundries, plastics production, timber processing and other compatible thermal-fluid applications.

The maximum permissible operating temperature of an installation is determined by the lowest applicable limit among the fluid, heater, pump, expansion vessel, pipework, seals, heat exchanger, control system and process equipment.

A maximum temperature should not be treated as a recommended continuous operating target. Operating at a lower temperature generally reduces oxidation and thermal degradation and may extend fluid service life.

It is not a fire-resistant hydraulic fluid. Although the product has relatively high flash and fire points, hot mineral oil and oil mist can ignite when exposed to a sufficient ignition source.

Key Features and Benefits

High Thermal Stability

The selected mineral base oil provides resistance to thermal cracking during correctly controlled high-temperature operation.

Thermal cracking occurs when oil molecules are exposed to excessive film temperatures. This may create lighter, more volatile components and heavier carbonaceous deposits.

Maintaining proper circulation and keeping the film temperature below its maximum limit help preserve viscosity, flash-point characteristics and overall heat-transfer performance.

Strong Oxidation Resistance

Oxidation can increase the oil’s viscosity, acidity and deposit-forming tendency. This can restrict circulation, reduce thermal efficiency and shorten fluid life.

A correctly designed closed system limits the contact between hot circulating oil and atmospheric oxygen. The expansion vessel should normally be positioned and controlled so the oil exposed to air remains substantially cooler than the fluid circulating through the heater.

Where appropriate, an engineered inert-gas blanket may further reduce oxidation. Any inerting arrangement must be designed and operated by qualified personnel.

Efficient Heat Transfer

PERFECTO HT 5 combines relatively low viscosity with useful specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity. These characteristics support efficient movement of thermal energy between the heater and process equipment.

Actual performance also depends on system design, pump capacity, circulation rate, pipe size, heater loading and heat-exchanger cleanliness.

Reduced Deposit Formation

The tightly controlled formulation helps minimise deposits in heaters and heat exchangers. Cleaner surfaces support efficient heat transfer and reduce the likelihood of local hot spots.

Fluid condition must still be monitored. Deposits may develop if the oil is overheated, contaminated, badly oxidised or kept in service beyond its useful condition.

High-Temperature Operating Capability

The Australian product catalogue permits bulk-fluid temperatures up to 320°C in compatible closed systems. The published maximum oil-film temperature is 340°C.

The difference between these two limits is important. A system may appear to be operating within its bulk-temperature limit while the fluid immediately next to the heater surface is being exposed to excessive temperature.

Adequate flow, properly adjusted burners and correctly functioning shutdown controls are essential for managing film temperature.

Low Pumping Resistance

The typical viscosity of 30.5 mm²/s at 40°C supports effective circulation during normal start-up and operating conditions.

Cold-start performance still depends on ambient temperature, pipe dimensions, pump selection and the product’s -9°C pour point. The heater must not be activated until adequate circulation has been established.

Support for System Cleanliness

Maintaining fluid cleanliness protects pumps, valves, seals and heat-transfer surfaces. The new oil should be transferred using clean, dedicated equipment and filtered where required by the system’s cleanliness standard.

Contamination with water, solvents, cleaning chemicals or incompatible lubricants can reduce thermal stability and create serious operational hazards.

Turbine-Flushing Performance

The solvency and thermal stability of PERFECTO HT 5 allow it to be used for turbine flushing under an approved maintenance procedure.

A successful flushing process requires specified flow rates, controlled temperature, suitable filtration and defined cleanliness targets. Fluid used for flushing should not automatically be retained as the operating turbine lubricant.

Practical 205-Litre Drum

The 205-litre pack provides an economical industrial quantity for smaller system fills, maintenance operations and sites that require reserve thermal fluid.

The drum format can be stored in an appropriately bunded lubricant area and transferred using compatible drum-pumping equipment.

Handling & Storage Advice

Store the drum upright in a cool, dry, secure and well-ventilated location. Keep the drum under cover and protect it from direct sunlight, rain, freezing conditions, excessive heat and physical damage.

Castrol recommends that lubricant packages should not be stored above 60°C. Keep the drum away from boilers, furnaces, hot pipework, welding operations, open flames, electrical arcing and other potential ignition sources.

A full drum contains approximately 178 kg of oil, excluding the mass of the steel drum and pallet. It must not be lifted, carried or repositioned manually.

Use a forklift, drum trolley, drum lifter, pallet jack or other purpose-designed mechanical equipment with an adequate rated capacity. Secure the drum before transport and prevent uncontrolled rolling or movement.

Do not lift the drum by its closures. Do not drop, drag, roll down ramps or subject the package to impact. Inspect the drum for damage, corrosion or leakage before handling.

Store the drum within suitable bunding or secondary containment. Protect closures against collision and unauthorised opening.

Keep all closures tightly sealed when the product is not being transferred. Water, condensation, dust, metal particles, used oil, solvents and other lubricants must not be allowed to enter the drum.

Use a clean and compatible drum pump for dispensing. Do not use equipment previously exposed to water-based products, fuel, coolant, brake fluid, chemicals or unknown lubricants unless it has been thoroughly cleaned and dried.

Unused PERFECTO HT 5 is not classified as hazardous under the referenced Australian GHS information. However, repeated skin exposure may cause defatting, and contact with hot oil can cause severe thermal burns.

Wear protective equipment suitable for the operation. This may include oil-resistant gloves, protective clothing, safety footwear, safety glasses, face protection and heat-resistant equipment when working near hot systems.

Clean spills promptly because the oil creates a serious slip hazard. Contain the product with suitable absorbent material and prevent it from entering drains, soil, stormwater systems or waterways.

Used thermal fluid may contain degradation products or process contamination not present in new oil. Arrange recycling or disposal through an authorised waste-management provider.

Consult the current Castrol Safety Data Sheet and the workplace risk assessment before use.

System Preparation and Directions for Use

Confirm that the system designer, heater manufacturer and process-equipment supplier permit mineral-based PERFECTO HT 5 with its published viscosity and operating-temperature characteristics.

Inspect the heater, pump, valves, pipework, expansion vessel, seals, strainers, filters, instrumentation and safety controls before filling.

The system must be clean, dry and free from water, cleaning solution, welding debris, rust, scale and incompatible fluid.

Residual water can flash into steam when heated, causing pressure surges, pump cavitation, violent discharge and equipment damage. New or serviced systems must be heated gradually so remaining moisture and low-boiling contamination can be removed safely.

Confirm compatibility before mixing PERFECTO HT 5 with any other heat transfer fluid. Physical miscibility does not guarantee chemical compatibility or retention of the original performance limits.

Transfer the oil using clean, dedicated equipment. Filter it during filling where required by the system manufacturer or site cleanliness standard.

Provide sufficient expansion volume. Mineral oil expands considerably between ambient and operating temperatures, and an overfilled system may discharge hot oil as the temperature rises.

Start the circulating pump before applying heat. Confirm adequate flow through the heater and all process branches.

Test flow switches, high-temperature cut-outs, low-level alarms, pressure controls and emergency shutdown systems before normal operation.

Increase the system temperature gradually during commissioning. Monitor pressure, flow, expansion-tank level, pump condition, bulk-fluid temperature and heater outlet temperature.

Never operate the heater without adequate circulation. When shutting down, continue operating the circulation pump during the controlled cooling period so residual heat can be removed from heater surfaces.

Establish a fluid-monitoring program for critical or continuously operating systems. Useful tests can include viscosity, acidity, flash point, carbon residue and insoluble contamination.

Investigate rapid darkening, unusual vapour, falling flash point, rising viscosity, pump cavitation, sludge or declining thermal efficiency. These conditions may indicate overheating, oxidation, contamination or a system-design problem.
