Description
Castrol PERFECTO HT 5 Heat Transfer Oil 1000L IBC
Product Description
Castrol PERFECTO HT 5 is a high-quality mineral-based heat transfer oil developed for indirect heating and cooling applications operating through a circulating thermal-fluid system. It is manufactured from solvent-refined, high-viscosity-index mineral oil selected for its thermal stability, oxidation resistance and dependable heat-transfer characteristics.
The product is primarily intended for compatible closed heat transfer systems where the fluid circulates between a heater and process equipment without coming into direct contact with the material being heated. The current Castrol Australia catalogue permits operation at bulk-fluid temperatures up to 320°C in properly designed closed systems.
The bulk-fluid temperature is the representative temperature of the circulating oil. It must not be confused with the local film temperature at the heater surface, which can be considerably higher. Castrol publishes a maximum oil-film temperature of 340°C. Both limits must be considered when designing, commissioning and operating the system.
Localised overheating can occur if fluid flow is inadequate, heater surfaces are fouled, control equipment is defective or the burner continues operating after circulation stops. System design must therefore maintain effective turbulent flow through the heater and prevent the oil next to the heating surface from exceeding its maximum permitted film temperature.
PERFECTO HT 5 has a typical kinematic viscosity of 30.5 mm²/s at 40°C. Its relatively low viscosity supports effective circulation and heat transfer while reducing unnecessary pumping resistance in a correctly designed system. As the oil heats, its viscosity decreases substantially, allowing it to move rapidly through pipework, heat exchangers and process equipment.
A tightly controlled formulation helps minimise deposit formation on heat-exchanger and heater surfaces. Cleaner surfaces support efficient heat transfer because carbonaceous deposits and sludge can act as insulation, create local hot spots and increase the energy required to achieve the desired process temperature.
The oil’s thermal stability helps it resist molecular breakdown under sustained high-temperature operation. Its oxidation stability is particularly important in closed systems because contact with air can progressively form acids, sludge and deposits. Fluid life depends heavily on system condition, operating temperature, air exposure, moisture contamination and the effectiveness of the expansion-tank arrangement.
PERFECTO HT 5 may also be used in open systems at substantially lower bulk-oil temperatures. Open systems expose a greater area of hot oil to atmospheric oxygen, accelerating oxidation and reducing service life. A temperature acceptable in a properly sealed or enclosed circuit may therefore be unsuitable for an open reservoir.
Castrol also identifies PERFECTO HT 5 as a suitable turbine flushing oil because of its solvency and thermal stability. This does not make it a general-purpose turbine lubricant. Turbine flushing should only be performed under an approved flushing procedure that specifies the correct fluid, circulation rate, temperature, filtration, cleanliness target and disposal process.
The 1000-litre intermediate bulk container is designed for industrial sites with substantial initial-fill, top-up or maintenance requirements. It provides an efficient bulk-handling format for manufacturing plants, processing facilities, laundries, asphalt and bitumen operations, timber-processing equipment, plastics production and other compatible thermal-fluid installations.

The product is not intended for direct contact with food, beverages, pharmaceuticals or potable water. Its use in a food-production facility does not establish incidental-food-contact approval.
PERFECTO HT 5 must not be used as an engine oil, hydraulic fluid, compressor lubricant, transformer oil, gear lubricant, metalworking fluid or general-purpose machinery oil unless Castrol and the equipment manufacturer specifically approve that application.
It is not a fire-resistant hydraulic fluid. Although its flash and fire points are comparatively high, hot mineral oil can ignite when exposed to an adequate ignition source. Leaks, oil mist and contact with hot surfaces must be controlled.
Key Features and Benefits
High Thermal Stability
The selected mineral base oil provides strong resistance to thermal cracking under correctly controlled operating conditions. Thermal cracking can produce lower-boiling components, vapours and carbonaceous deposits when a fluid is exposed to excessive film temperatures.
Maintaining the specified flow rate and maximum film temperature helps preserve the fluid’s viscosity, flash-point characteristics and heat-transfer performance.
Oxidation Resistance
Oxidation occurs when hot oil reacts with oxygen. The process can increase viscosity and acidity and produce varnish, sludge and deposits.
A properly designed closed system limits the exposure of hot circulating oil to air. The expansion vessel should normally be positioned and controlled so that the oil at the air-to-fluid interface remains substantially cooler than the main circulating fluid.
Where system design permits, an appropriate inert-gas blanket may further reduce oxidation. Any inerting arrangement must be engineered and operated by competent personnel.
Efficient Heat Transfer
PERFECTO HT 5 provides a combination of relatively low viscosity, useful specific heat capacity and predictable thermal conductivity. These characteristics support rapid circulation and efficient movement of thermal energy between the heater and process equipment.
Heat-transfer performance depends on more than the fluid alone. Pump selection, flow velocity, pipe size, heat-exchanger design, heater loading and deposit control all influence system efficiency.
Deposit Control
The tightly controlled oil specification helps reduce deposit formation in heaters and heat exchangers. Maintaining clean heat-transfer surfaces helps preserve thermal efficiency and reduce the risk of local hot spots.
Deposits can still form if the oil is overheated, heavily oxidised, contaminated or kept in service after it has deteriorated. Regular sampling and condition monitoring are recommended for critical or continuously operated systems.
High-Temperature Capability
The Australian catalogue permits bulk-fluid temperatures up to 320°C in compatible closed systems. The maximum published oil-film temperature is 340°C.
These temperatures are upper operating limits, not automatic operating targets. Lower temperatures generally reduce the rate of oxidation and thermal degradation and can help extend fluid service life.
Low Pumping Resistance
The typical viscosity of 30.5 mm²/s at 40°C supports circulation during normal start-up conditions and decreases as the fluid reaches operating temperature.
Cold-start capability still depends on ambient temperature, pipe dimensions, pump design and the product’s -9°C pour point. Heating equipment must not be energised unless the fluid is circulating at an adequate rate.
Turbine-Flushing Capability
Castrol identifies PERFECTO HT 5 as an effective turbine flushing oil because of its solvency and thermal stability. It may assist with removing compatible preservative oils, loose contamination and residues during an engineered flushing process.
Flushing results depend on temperature, flow velocity, filtration, system geometry and cleanliness criteria. The flushing fluid must not automatically be retained as the operating turbine lubricant.
Practical 1000-Litre Supply
The IBC package supports controlled bulk delivery for large installations and reduces the number of individual drums required for a major fill.
A closed or carefully controlled transfer arrangement can reduce handling time and help protect the fluid from moisture, dust and other contamination.

Handling & Storage Advice
Store the IBC upright in a cool, dry, secure and well-ventilated location. Keep it under cover and protect it from direct sunlight, rain, freezing conditions, excessive heat and physical damage.
Castrol recommends that packaged lubricants should not be stored above 60°C. Do not place the IBC near boilers, furnaces, welding work, hot pipework, open flames, electrical arcing equipment or other ignition sources.
Keep all caps, valves and closures sealed when the product is not being transferred. Prevent the entry of water, condensation, dust, metal particles, cleaning chemicals, solvents, used oil and other lubricants.
The oil content alone weighs approximately 868 kg at 15°C. The filled package has a higher gross mass after including the IBC cage, inner container, pallet and fittings. Use a forklift, pallet jack or other mechanical equipment with adequate rated capacity.
Insert forklift tines fully into the designated pallet channels and keep the load stable and close to the ground during movement. Do not lift the container by its cage, outlet valve, top opening or improvised attachment points.
Do not roll, drag, drop or subject the IBC to impact. Do not stack filled containers unless the IBC manufacturer, storage design and applicable workplace requirements specifically permit stacking under the actual conditions.
Use suitable bunding or secondary containment capable of controlling a leak. Protect the lower outlet valve against collision and unauthorised operation.
Unused PERFECTO HT 5 is not classified as hazardous under the referenced Australian GHS information; however, repeated skin exposure may remove natural oils from the skin, and hot fluid can cause severe thermal burns.
Wear protective clothing appropriate to the operation. Depending on the risk assessment, this may include oil-resistant gloves, safety glasses, face protection, protective footwear and heat-resistant clothing.
Clean spills promptly because the product creates a serious slip hazard. Stop the leak where this can be done safely, contain the oil with compatible absorbent material and prevent it from entering drains, soil, stormwater systems or waterways.
Used thermal fluid may contain degradation products or contamination not present in the new oil. Collect used fluid for analysis, recycling or disposal through an authorised waste-management provider. Do not dispose of it into drains, soil or general waste.
Consult the current Castrol Safety Data Sheet and site-specific risk assessment before workplace use.
System Preparation and Directions for Use
Confirm that the system designer, heater manufacturer and process-equipment supplier permit a mineral-based heat transfer oil with the published viscosity and temperature characteristics.
Inspect the entire system before filling. Check heaters, pumps, seals, valves, pipework, expansion vessels, heat exchangers, strainers, filters, controls and safety interlocks.
The system should be clean, dry and free from water, cleaning solution, welding debris, rust, scale and incompatible fluid. Water must not be used as a final flushing medium unless a validated drying procedure will completely remove it before the oil is added.
Residual water can flash into steam when heated, causing pressure surges, pump cavitation, violent discharge and possible equipment damage. New or serviced systems must be heated gradually so that remaining moisture and low-boiling contamination can be removed safely.
Confirm compatibility before mixing PERFECTO HT 5 with another heat transfer fluid. Physical mixing does not establish chemical compatibility or guarantee that the combined fluid will retain either product’s performance limits.
Use clean, dedicated pumps, hoses and fittings for transfer from the IBC. Filter the fluid during filling where required by the system’s cleanliness standard.
Fill the system according to the equipment manufacturer’s procedure while allowing displaced air to escape. Maintain the correct expansion volume because mineral oil expands substantially as its temperature increases.
Start the circulating pump before applying heat. Confirm adequate flow through the heater and all process branches. Test flow switches, high-temperature cut-outs, low-level alarms and emergency shutdown systems.
Raise the temperature gradually during commissioning. Monitor pump condition, system pressure, flow, expansion-tank level, bulk temperature and heater outlet temperature.
Never operate the heater without circulation. Provide a controlled cool-down period with the pump continuing to circulate after the heat source has been shut down. This helps prevent residual heater energy from creating excessive film temperatures.
Sample the fluid periodically and test relevant properties such as viscosity, acidity, flash point, insoluble contamination and carbon residue. Monitoring trends is more useful than relying only on a fixed replacement interval.
Investigate rapid darkening, rising viscosity, falling flash point, excessive vapour, pump cavitation, sludge or reduced heat-transfer efficiency. These symptoms may indicate oxidation, thermal cracking, contamination or system-design problems.
