Castrol POWER1 Ultimate 4T 5W-40 Full Synthetic Motorcycle Oil 4L
Product Description
Castrol POWER1 Ultimate 4T 5W-40 is an advanced full-synthetic motorcycle engine oil engineered to deliver outstanding performance and protection across the engine, integrated gearbox and oil-immersed wet clutch. Its 5-in-1 performance formula is designed to provide excellent acceleration, dependable component protection, smooth riding, effective temperature control and enduring performance during demanding motorcycle operation.
Modern four-stroke motorcycles place significant demands on their lubricant. Many motorcycles use one oil to protect three mechanically different systems: the engine, gearbox and wet clutch. The lubricant must circulate rapidly during cold starts, protect high-speed engine components, withstand the shearing action of transmission gears and retain carefully controlled friction characteristics for the clutch.
Castrol POWER1 Ultimate 4T 5W-40 addresses these requirements through full-synthetic technology and a motorcycle-specific additive system. It provides the viscosity stability, wear protection and clutch-friction performance required for compatible high-performance four-stroke motorcycles operating under everyday, touring and demanding riding conditions.
The SAE 5W-40 viscosity grade combines excellent low-temperature circulation with dependable operating-temperature film strength. Its 5W winter classification allows the lubricant to flow quickly during cold starts, helping deliver protection to camshafts, bearings, valve-train components and other critical surfaces. The SAE 40 operating-temperature viscosity helps maintain a strong lubricating film once the engine reaches normal or elevated operating temperature.
Castrol POWER1 Ultimate 4T 5W-40 meets JASO MA2 requirements for motorcycles with oil-immersed wet clutches. JASO MA2 defines controlled friction characteristics that support positive clutch engagement, efficient power transfer and predictable clutch release. This is particularly important in motorcycles where the engine, transmission and clutch share a common lubricant.
The current Castrol Australia product range lists API SP for POWER1 Ultimate 4T 5W-40. Earlier Australian product catalogues and containers for the 4-litre item code 3434502 may display API SN. API SP is the newer petrol-engine performance category and is backward compatible for suitable applications requiring API SN or an earlier API petrol category. Customers requiring a particular specification should confirm the claim printed on the supplied package and check it against the motorcycle manufacturer’s requirements.
The full-synthetic formulation is suitable for compatible carburettor and fuel-injected four-stroke motorcycles. It also complies with the lubricant requirements of catalyst-equipped motorcycle engines when the specified viscosity and performance categories are appropriate.
The convenient 4-litre pack is suitable for individual motorcycle servicing and provides sufficient oil for a complete change in many compatible motorcycles. Actual sump capacity varies considerably, so the owner’s manual must be checked before filling.

Key Features and Benefits
Full-Synthetic Motorcycle Technology
Castrol POWER1 Ultimate 4T 5W-40 uses full-synthetic technology to provide dependable lubrication across a broad temperature range. Synthetic base oils generally provide strong resistance to oxidation, improved low-temperature flow and effective viscosity control during severe operation.
This performance is valuable in motorcycles because oil sump capacities are often relatively small while engine speeds, power density and operating temperatures may be high. The lubricant may also be exposed to substantial mechanical shearing within an integrated gearbox.
Five-in-One Performance Formula
Castrol identifies five principal performance areas for POWER1 Ultimate:
- Excellent acceleration
- Excellent protection
- Smooth riding
- Temperature control
- Enduring performance
These benefits are designed to work together rather than treat the engine, clutch and gearbox as separate lubrication applications.
Excellent Acceleration
Internal friction consumes part of the power produced by an engine. Castrol POWER1 Ultimate is engineered to reduce unnecessary internal resistance while maintaining the protection and wet-clutch friction required by compatible motorcycles.
Castrol reports that POWER1 Ultimate accelerated four metres ahead of a premium competitor oil in a controlled test using a Honda CBR300 engine over 30 seconds at full throttle. This result represents a specific controlled test and should not be interpreted as a guaranteed performance improvement in every motorcycle.
Actual acceleration depends on engine condition, motorcycle weight, gearing, rider input, fuel quality, tyre condition, ambient temperature and the viscosity recommended for the motorcycle.
Engine and Component Protection
High engine speeds, concentrated loads and elevated temperatures can reduce the thickness of the normal lubricant film. Castrol POWER1 Ultimate contains anti-wear technology that helps protect critical components when operating conditions become demanding.
Protected components can include:
- Camshafts
- Valve-train components
- Crankshaft bearings
- Connecting-rod bearings
- Pistons and rings
- Cylinder surfaces
- Timing components
- Transmission gears
- Gearbox bearings and shafts
The lubricant supports engine durability but cannot compensate for mechanical defects, inadequate oil quantity, blocked oil passages or service intervals that exceed manufacturer requirements.
JASO MA2 Wet-Clutch Performance
A wet motorcycle clutch operates directly within the engine oil. The lubricant therefore affects clutch engagement, release and power transfer.
Passenger-car engine oils may contain friction modifiers that are unsuitable for certain wet motorcycle clutches. Castrol POWER1 Ultimate 4T 5W-40 meets JASO MA2 requirements and provides controlled friction characteristics for compatible wet-clutch systems.
JASO MA2 represents the higher-friction portion of the JASO MA motorcycle classification. It supports positive clutch engagement, efficient power transfer and predictable operation under load.
Persistent clutch slipping, grabbing or difficult engagement should be mechanically investigated. Oil cannot repair worn, glazed or incorrectly adjusted clutch components.
Smooth Riding and Gear Changing
Motorcycle gearbox gears place significant mechanical stress on the engine oil. The lubricant must protect gear teeth and bearings while maintaining suitable viscosity throughout service.
Castrol POWER1 Ultimate helps provide effective gearbox lubrication and controlled clutch performance. This combination can support smooth gear selection and predictable shifting.
Shift quality is also influenced by clutch adjustment, transmission condition, chain tension, linkage operation and riding technique. Correct oil supports the system but cannot correct worn or damaged components.
Temperature Control
Motorcycle engines may operate under high thermal loads during sustained highway riding, competition, slow traffic, hot-weather operation and repeated acceleration.
Castrol POWER1 Ultimate is engineered to help control friction and heat within the lubricated system. Its full-synthetic formulation maintains protection under demanding operating conditions and helps preserve lubricant performance during long rides.
Temperature control does not replace the motorcycle’s cooling system. Coolant condition, radiator cleanliness, airflow, oil level and mechanical condition must also be maintained.
Enduring Performance
High temperatures, combustion contaminants and mechanical shearing can progressively degrade motorcycle oil. Oxidised or heavily sheared lubricant may become less effective at protecting the engine, gearbox and clutch.
The full-synthetic formulation is designed to resist viscosity loss and thermal degradation, helping maintain performance throughout the manufacturer’s specified service interval.
The use of a premium synthetic oil does not automatically permit extended oil-change intervals. Racing, off-road use, frequent short trips, dusty conditions and prolonged high-temperature operation may require shorter intervals.
Low-Temperature Starting
The SAE 5W rating supports effective oil circulation during cold starts. Fast lubricant delivery is important because many critical components rely on pressurised or splash lubrication immediately after the engine starts.
Even with a suitable low-temperature oil, riders should avoid applying immediate high speed or heavy load to a cold engine. Follow the manufacturer’s warm-up recommendations.
Catalyst Compatibility
Castrol states that POWER1 Ultimate 4T 5W-40 complies with the lubricant requirements of catalyst-equipped motorcycle engines.
This does not mean it is suitable for every catalyst-equipped motorcycle. The owner’s handbook must still specify a compatible SAE viscosity, API category and JASO performance level.
Suitable for Touring and Performance Riding
The balanced formulation makes Castrol POWER1 Ultimate appropriate for compatible motorcycles used for commuting, recreational riding, high-speed road use and long-distance touring.
Long rides may expose the oil to sustained operating temperatures and extended periods at high engine speed. Oil level should be checked before departure and at suitable intervals during extended travel.

Handling & Storage Advice
Store Castrol POWER1 Ultimate 4T 5W-40 in its original, correctly labelled 4-litre container. Keep the cap securely closed and store the container upright in a cool, dry and well-ventilated location.
Protect the product from direct sunlight, rain, freezing conditions, excessive heat, ignition sources and physical damage. Castrol recommends that lubricant packages be stored under cover and not exposed to temperatures above 60°C.
Do not allow water, fuel, coolant, brake fluid, cleaning chemicals, dust, used oil or other contaminants to enter the container. Use a clean funnel or dedicated dispensing equipment when filling the motorcycle.
Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact with new or used engine oil. Wear suitable oil-resistant gloves when servicing motorcycles and wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling.
Do not use petrol, solvents, abrasive cleaners or contaminated workshop rags to remove oil from the skin. Remove oil-contaminated clothing and wash it before reuse.
Clean spills promptly because motorcycle oil can create a serious slip hazard. Contain spilled material using suitable absorbent products and prevent it from entering drains, soil, stormwater systems or waterways.
Used oil should be collected and sent to an authorised lubricant-recycling or waste-management service. Do not dispose of used engine oil into drains, soil, general waste or waterways.
Empty containers may retain oil residue. Do not cut, weld, drill, heat or expose empty packaging to flame. Consult the current Castrol Safety Data Sheet before workplace or commercial use.
Directions for Use
Before use, check the motorcycle owner’s handbook and confirm that SAE 5W-40 and JASO MA or MA2 oil are recommended. Confirm whether the API specification displayed on the supplied container satisfies the motorcycle’s requirements.
Warm the engine according to the manufacturer’s servicing instructions. Switch off the engine and secure the motorcycle on an appropriate stand before beginning the oil change.
Used engine oil can be extremely hot. Wear suitable protective equipment and take care when removing the filler cap, drain plug and oil filter.
Drain the used oil into an appropriate collection container. Replace the drain-plug sealing washer where required and tighten the drain plug to the manufacturer’s specified torque.
Replace the oil filter using the correct part and procedure. Add Castrol POWER1 Ultimate gradually through the designated filler opening. Do not rely on the complete 4-litre container as the correct fill quantity.
Start the engine and allow the oil to circulate while checking around the filter, drain plug and filler for leakage. Switch off the engine, allow the oil to settle and check the level using the procedure specified by the motorcycle manufacturer.
Do not overfill the engine. Both insufficient and excessive oil levels can cause operating problems or engine damage.
Follow the manufacturer’s recommended oil and filter service interval. Short trips, high-speed operation, racing, off-road use, dusty environments, excessive idling and severe temperatures may require more frequent servicing.
Avoid mixing this product with unknown motorcycle oils. Although many oils are physically miscible, mixing formulations may reduce clutch-friction performance, viscosity stability and the overall specification of the finished lubricant.
