Description

Mobil SHC 630 Synthetic Gear and Circulating Oil ISO VG 220 (208L)

Product Description

Mobil SHC 630 is a premium-performance ISO VG 220 synthetic circulating and industrial gear oil developed for demanding gear, bearing and circulation systems operating under severe loads, elevated temperatures or difficult environmental conditions. It belongs to the Mobil SHC 600 Series of high-performance synthetic lubricants and is designed to provide outstanding equipment protection, extended lubricant life, effective deposit control and reliable performance across a wide operating-temperature range.

Industrial gearboxes and bearing systems can expose lubricants to high mechanical loads, sustained heat, sliding friction, water contamination and long operating periods. Under these conditions, conventional mineral oils may oxidise, thicken or form deposits more rapidly, particularly where equipment operates continuously or where oil changes are difficult and costly. Mobil SHC 630 combines carefully selected synthetic base oils with a balanced additive system to resist thermal, oxidative and chemical degradation.

The ISO VG 220 viscosity grade provides a strong lubricating film for compatible enclosed gear drives, rolling-element bearings, sliding bearings and circulating systems. Its high viscosity index helps the oil retain suitable viscosity and film thickness at elevated temperatures while providing improved low-temperature fluidity compared with many conventional mineral-based ISO VG 220 lubricants.

Mobil SHC 630 is particularly effective in high-ratio or low-efficiency worm gear systems, where sliding contact can generate substantial friction and heat. Its low traction characteristics help reduce internal friction within suitable gearing and circulating systems. In controlled worm-gear testing, Mobil SHC 600 Series technology demonstrated energy-efficiency improvements of up to 3.6% compared with conventional mineral reference oils of the same viscosity grade. Actual energy savings depend on gearbox design, load, speed, operating temperature, lubricant condition and previous oil used.

The lubricant also provides high load-carrying capability and excellent resistance to gear scuffing. Its FZG scuffing performance exceeds load stage 13 in the specified test, supporting protection for heavily loaded gear teeth and other components where boundary-lubrication conditions may occur.

Mobil SHC 630 is approved by Flender and SEW-Eurodrive and meets or exceeds recognised industrial gear-lubricant requirements including AGMA 9005-F16, DIN 51517-3:2018-09 and ISO L-CKD under ISO 12925-1:2024. These performance credentials make it suitable for many critical industrial systems where an OEM or lubricant specification calls for an ISO VG 220 synthetic gear or circulating oil with the applicable performance level.

Supplied in a 208-litre drum, Mobil SHC 630 is suitable for industrial facilities, manufacturing plants, mines, processing operations and maintenance departments requiring bulk lubricant for critical machinery or multiple compatible units.

Mobil SHC 630 should only be used in compressors when the equipment manufacturer permits an ISO VG 220 synthetic lubricant with its formulation and performance characteristics. Compressor lubricant selection must consider gas composition, discharge temperature, operating pressure, seal materials, lubricant solubility and process requirements.

The product must not be selected solely on viscosity grade. ISO VG 220 identifies the nominal viscosity at 40°C but does not confirm suitability for every gearbox or bearing system. The equipment manufacturer’s specification, gear type, operating load, speed, temperature and material compatibility must also be considered.

Key Features and Benefits

Synthetic High-Temperature Performance

Mobil SHC 630 is formulated to resist the thermal and oxidative breakdown that can occur when industrial oil is exposed to sustained heat. Oxidation can cause viscosity increase, acidic degradation products, sludge and varnish, potentially restricting oil circulation and interfering with component operation.

The synthetic base oils and antioxidant system help control this degradation, supporting long lubricant life and cleaner machinery. Under appropriate operating conditions, Mobil states that the SHC 600 Series can provide oil life up to six times longer than conventional oil. Actual drain intervals must be established using equipment inspections, oil analysis, operating conditions and the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements.

High Viscosity Index

Mobil SHC 630 has a viscosity index of 169. A high viscosity index means that the lubricant’s viscosity changes less as temperature changes compared with many conventional mineral oils.

This characteristic supports suitable oil-film thickness at elevated operating temperatures while allowing improved circulation and start-up performance at lower temperatures. It is particularly beneficial for equipment exposed to seasonal temperature variation or machinery operating without dedicated oil heating or cooling.

The pour point of minus 48°C demonstrates excellent low-temperature fluidity, but it should not be interpreted as the minimum permissible operating temperature. Actual low-temperature suitability depends on gearbox design, pumpability, starting torque, lubricant-feed method and equipment-manufacturer requirements.

High Load-Carrying Capability

Gear teeth and bearing contacts can experience very high localised pressure. When the normal lubricating film becomes thin, surface damage may occur through scuffing, scoring, adhesive wear or fatigue.

Mobil SHC 630 provides high load-carrying capability and achieves an FZG scuffing failure load stage greater than 13 under the stated test conditions. This performance helps protect heavily loaded gears and supports longer equipment life where the lubricant is correctly selected and maintained.

Low Traction and Potential Energy Efficiency

Traction describes internal friction generated as a lubricant is sheared between moving surfaces. Mobil SHC 630 has low traction characteristics that can reduce friction in sliding mechanisms such as worm gearing.

Reduced internal friction may contribute to lower power consumption and reduced steady-state operating temperatures. Mobil reports potential energy-efficiency improvements of up to 3.6% for SHC 600 Series oils compared with same-viscosity conventional mineral reference oils in controlled worm-gear testing.

This figure is not a guaranteed saving for every machine. Equipment condition, load, alignment, speed, lubricant viscosity, previous oil, operating temperature and gearbox design can materially affect the result.

Bearing Protection

Mobil SHC 630 is suitable for compatible rolling-element and plain-bearing applications requiring ISO VG 220 oil. Its film strength and low traction properties help protect bearing surfaces while reducing the effects of microslip in rolling contacts.

The product records a typical FE8 roller-wear result of 2 mg under the specified DIN test, demonstrating strong anti-wear performance. Correct bearing lubrication still requires appropriate lubricant quantity, cleanliness, viscosity, circulation and contamination control.

Water Separation

Water can enter industrial lubricant systems through condensation, washdown, damaged seals, coolers or process contamination. Water may promote corrosion, reduce film strength and interfere with additive performance.

Mobil SHC 630 provides effective water-separation characteristics, with a typical ASTM D1401 result of 20 minutes at 82°C. This allows free water to separate from the oil so it may be drained or removed from properly designed systems.

Water contamination should be investigated rather than treated as normal. Damaged seals, breathers, coolers or process connections should be repaired, and contaminated oil should be monitored to confirm that its condition remains acceptable.

Rust and Corrosion Protection

The balanced additive system provides dependable protection against rust and corrosion. Mobil SHC 630 passes ASTM D665 Procedure B and provides a copper-strip corrosion rating of 1B after 24 hours at 121°C.

These properties support protection of ferrous and compatible non-ferrous components in gearboxes, bearings and circulation systems. They do not eliminate the need to control water, acids, process contamination or unsuitable metal combinations.

Foam Control and Air Release

Foam and entrained air can reduce lubricant-film strength, cause erratic pump operation and interfere with oil-level measurements. Mobil SHC 630 incorporates balanced foam-control and air-release performance to support reliable operation in circulating systems.

Oil levels, return-line design and pump suction conditions should be inspected if persistent foam occurs. Excessive filling, air leaks, contaminated oil and incompatible lubricant mixtures can all contribute to foaming.

Handling & Storage Advice

Store Mobil SHC 630 in its original, correctly labelled 208-litre drum. Keep the drum securely closed and store it upright in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area protected from rain, direct sunlight, excessive heat and contamination.

Where outdoor storage cannot be avoided, protect the drum from weather and prevent water from collecting around closures. Correct drum-handling equipment should be used when moving, lifting or positioning the package. A full 208-litre drum is extremely heavy and must not be manually lifted.

Use clean, dedicated pumps, hoses and transfer containers. Do not allow water, dust, dirt, metal particles, cleaning chemicals, used oil or other lubricants to enter the drum. Contamination may reduce lubricant life and interfere with gear, bearing or circulation-system performance.

Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact with new or used lubricant. Suitable workplace protective equipment may include oil-resistant gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses. Wash exposed skin with soap and water after handling.

Clean spills promptly because synthetic gear oil can create a serious slip hazard. Contain spilled material using suitable absorbent products and prevent it from entering drains, stormwater systems, soil or waterways.

Used lubricant should be collected and sent to an authorised oil-recycling or waste-management facility. Empty drums may retain oil residue and should not be cut, welded, drilled, heated or exposed to flame. Consult the current Mobil Safety Data Sheet before workplace use.

Changeover and Compatibility

Mobil SHC 600 Series oils are generally compatible with mineral-oil-based products. However, mixing Mobil SHC 630 with an existing mineral or synthetic lubricant may reduce its oxidation resistance, low-temperature performance, energy-efficiency potential and overall service life.

Before changing to Mobil SHC 630, drain the previous oil as completely as practical. Remove sludge, deposits and contaminated residue, and clean or flush the system when required. Replace contaminated filters and inspect breathers, seals, sight glasses, coolers and magnetic drain plugs.

Mobil states that SHC 600 Series oils are compatible with most NBR, FKM and other elastomeric seal materials commonly used with mineral oils. Considerable variation exists between seal compounds, so compatibility should be confirmed with the equipment or seal manufacturer before conversion.

Do not automatically mix Mobil SHC 630 with polyglycol-based lubricants or other incompatible synthetic fluids. Where the previous product type is uncertain, obtain technical advice and conduct the appropriate flushing procedure.

Maintenance and Condition Monitoring

Check oil levels regularly and investigate unexpected consumption or leakage. Monitor operating temperature, noise, vibration, filter condition and lubricant appearance.

A structured oil-analysis program can help evaluate viscosity, oxidation, water content, particle contamination, additive condition and wear metals. Trending results over time is generally more useful than relying on one isolated sample.

Extended oil-drain intervals should only be adopted when supported by oil analysis and equipment condition. High temperature, contamination, excessive loading, poor ventilation and incompatible top-up oils can shorten lubricant life.

Use filtered transfer equipment appropriate to the machinery’s cleanliness requirement. Keep dispensing equipment sealed between uses and label it clearly for Mobil SHC 630 to prevent cross-contamination.
