Description

Mobilux EP 004 Semi-Fluid Extreme Pressure Grease NLGI 00

Product Description

Mobilux EP 004 is a high-performance, semi-fluid extreme-pressure grease developed for enclosed gears, bearings, gear cases and chain cases where conventional gear oil cannot be retained effectively. Its NLGI 00 consistency allows the lubricant to flow and redistribute within enclosed housings while providing better leakage control than a conventional liquid gear oil.

The product is manufactured using an ISO VG 150 mineral base oil, a lithium thickener and an extreme-pressure additive system. This combination provides dependable lubrication under heavy loads, shock loading and vibration while helping protect metal surfaces against wear, rust, corrosion and water exposure.

Mobilux EP 004 is particularly suitable for poorly sealed or older gear housings where oil escapes through worn, damaged or missing seals. Its semi-fluid consistency helps the lubricant remain within the housing while still flowing around gears and bearings. This makes it useful for industrial gear cases, chain cases and certain underground mining machinery where an ordinary gear oil may leak too quickly to maintain dependable lubrication.

The “004” in the product name is a Mobil product designation. The actual grease consistency is NLGI 00. NLGI 00 grease is softer and more fluid than conventional NLGI 1 or NLGI 2 bearing grease. It is intended for specialised applications requiring a lubricant that can flow through or circulate within an enclosed mechanism while retaining sufficient grease structure to reduce leakage.

Mobilux EP 004 has a base-oil viscosity of 160 mm²/s at 40°C, corresponding approximately to ISO VG 150. This base-oil viscosity supports a strong lubricating film across enclosed gears and bearings operating under moderate speeds and substantial loads.

The product provides a four-ball weld point of 250 kgf and a Timken OK load of 40 lb, demonstrating effective extreme-pressure and load-carrying performance. It is designed to help reduce wear where gears and bearings experience high contact pressure, intermittent shock loads or vibration.

Mobilux EP 004 carries SEW-Eurodrive approval and meets or exceeds the requirements of DIN 51826:2005-01 GP 00 G-20. These credentials make it a suitable option for compatible industrial gear applications requiring a semi-fluid NLGI 00 lithium grease of this performance level.

The recommended operating-temperature range is from -20°C to 120°C. Equipment design, operating speed, loading, ambient temperature, housing condition and relubrication method must all be considered when determining suitability.

Mobilux EP 004 must not automatically be used as a replacement for conventional gearbox oil solely because the existing equipment is leaking. A damaged seal may require mechanical repair, and changing lubricant type can affect oil flow, heat transfer, churning losses, bearing lubrication and equipment efficiency.

The equipment manufacturer’s lubricant recommendation should always be checked before conversion. The manufacturer must permit an NLGI 00 semi-fluid lithium grease with an ISO VG 150 base oil and the stated performance characteristics.

Mobil specifically excludes electric-motor gearing from the underground mining applications identified for Mobilux EP 004 and Mobilux EP 023. Electric motor bearings and gear units may require specialised lubricants selected according to motor speed, insulation considerations, bearing design and equipment-manufacturer instructions.

Key Features and Benefits

Semi-Fluid NLGI 00 Consistency

Mobilux EP 004 has an NLGI 00 consistency, giving it a soft, semi-fluid structure. This allows the grease to flow around enclosed gears and bearings more readily than conventional NLGI 1 or NLGI 2 grease.

The semi-fluid consistency helps the lubricant redistribute after gears move through it. This supports the delivery of lubricant to gear teeth, bearings and other contact surfaces within a compatible enclosed housing.

At the same time, its grease structure provides better leakage control than a conventional liquid gear oil. This is particularly beneficial in gear cases with worn or imperfect seals.

Effective Leakage Control

Conventional gear oil can escape rapidly through damaged, worn or missing seals. Once the lubricant level falls, gears and bearings may operate with inadequate lubrication.

Mobilux EP 004 is designed to reduce leakage in these applications. Its semi-fluid consistency helps it remain within the housing while continuing to flow sufficiently for compatible gear and bearing lubrication.

This benefit does not eliminate the need to inspect and repair damaged equipment. Persistent lubricant loss may indicate seal failure, excessive internal pressure, worn shafts, damaged housings, incorrect lubricant selection or overfilling.

Extreme-Pressure Protection

Enclosed gears can experience concentrated contact pressure as gear teeth engage under load. Shock loading, reversing operation and vibration can further increase stress on the lubricant film.

Mobilux EP 004 contains an extreme-pressure additive system that helps protect metal surfaces when normal lubricant-film thickness becomes reduced. Its four-ball weld point of 250 kgf demonstrates dependable load-carrying capability under the specified laboratory test.

The Timken OK load of 40 lb provides an additional indication of the product’s extreme-pressure performance and ability to maintain protection under loaded sliding contact.

Wear Protection

The lubricant helps reduce wear across loaded gears, bearings and other lubricated components. Effective wear control can support equipment reliability, extend component service life and reduce the risk of unplanned downtime.

Lubricant performance cannot compensate for incorrect alignment, damaged gear teeth, overloaded equipment, excessive contamination or mechanical defects. Regular inspections remain necessary.

Rust and Corrosion Protection

Moisture can enter gear housings through condensation, washdown, damaged seals or operation in wet environments. Water may promote rust, corrosion and premature component deterioration.

Mobilux EP 004 contains corrosion-inhibiting additives that help protect ferrous metal surfaces. Its SKF Emcor rust-test result of 0,0 with distilled water indicates strong protection under the stated laboratory test conditions.

Resistance to Water Washout

The lithium grease structure provides resistance to water washout, helping the lubricant remain in place when exposed to moisture.

Water resistance is valuable in mining, construction, agricultural and industrial environments where machinery may be exposed to rain, washdown or condensation. However, water resistance does not mean that unlimited water contamination is acceptable.

Excessive water can still reduce lubricant performance, encourage corrosion and alter consistency. Contaminated lubricant should be investigated and replaced where necessary.

ISO VG 150 Base-Oil Viscosity

Mobilux EP 004 uses a mineral base oil with a typical kinematic viscosity of 160 mm²/s at 40°C and 14.8 mm²/s at 100°C. This corresponds approximately to the ISO VG 150 viscosity class.

The relatively substantial base-oil viscosity helps maintain lubricant-film strength across enclosed gears and bearings operating under moderate speeds and heavy loads.

Base-oil viscosity is separate from NLGI grade. NLGI 00 describes the consistency of the complete grease, while ISO VG 150 describes the viscosity of the oil contained within the grease.

Protection Under Shock Loading and Vibration

Mining, materials-handling and industrial gear systems may experience changes in load, impact and continuous vibration. These conditions can challenge the lubricant film and increase wear.

Mobilux EP 004 is formulated to provide dependable protection in applications exposed to heavy and shock loading, helping support consistent equipment operation.

SEW-Eurodrive Approval

Mobilux EP 004 carries SEW-Eurodrive approval. This provides a valuable reference for compatible SEW-Eurodrive equipment where this exact lubricant is included in the relevant lubrication instructions or approved-lubricant documentation.

Approval does not mean that Mobilux EP 004 is suitable for every SEW-Eurodrive unit. Gear design, mounting position, operating temperature, speed, load and sealing arrangement must be checked against the instructions for the specific drive.

Wide Industrial Application Range

Although particularly associated with enclosed gear cases and underground mining equipment, Mobilux EP 004 may also be used in other compatible industrial applications where a conventional gear oil cannot be retained.

Potential applications can include manufacturing, processing, agriculture, construction, quarrying and materials handling. Suitability depends on equipment requirements rather than industry type alone.

Handling & Storage Advice

Store Mobilux EP 004 in its original, correctly labelled container. Keep the lid or closure securely fitted and store the package upright in a cool, dry and well-ventilated location.

Protect the grease from direct sunlight, rain, excessive heat, ignition sources and physical damage. Avoid prolonged storage outdoors or in areas exposed to substantial temperature variation.

Grease containers should remain closed when not in use. Exposure to dust, dirt, metal particles, moisture and process chemicals can contaminate the lubricant and reduce equipment reliability.

Use clean and dedicated pumps, transfer equipment, scoops and dispensing tools. Equipment previously used for another grease should be thoroughly cleaned unless lubricant compatibility has been confirmed.

Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact with new or used grease. Wear suitable oil-resistant gloves and protective clothing when required by the workplace risk assessment.

Wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water after handling. Do not use petrol, kerosene, solvents or abrasive cleaners to remove grease from the skin.

Clean spills promptly. Semi-fluid grease can spread across floors and create a serious slip hazard. Prevent released material from entering drains, stormwater systems, soil or waterways.

Used grease may contain harmful contaminants accumulated during service. Collect removed lubricant and send it to an authorised recycling or waste-management provider. Do not dispose of grease into drains, soil, general waste or waterways.

Consult the current Mobil Safety Data Sheet before workplace use, particularly when establishing storage, personal-protection, spill-response and disposal procedures.

Directions for Use

Before filling, confirm that the equipment manufacturer permits an NLGI 00 lithium extreme-pressure grease with an ISO VG 150 mineral base oil.

Check the required lubricant quantity and fill level. Overfilling an enclosed gearbox can cause excessive churning, heat generation, increased power consumption, seal pressure and leakage.

Where converting from another lubricant, determine whether the existing product is compatible with Mobilux EP 004. Incompatible greases can soften, harden, separate or lose their intended lubrication properties.

Drain or remove as much of the previous lubricant as practical. Clean the housing when required by the equipment manufacturer or maintenance procedure.

Inspect seals, breathers, shafts and housings before filling. Mobilux EP 004 can help control leakage, but it should not be used to conceal a serious mechanical defect requiring repair.

Introduce the grease using clean dispensing equipment. Ensure that the lubricant reaches the required gears and bearings rather than remaining in an inactive area of the housing.

After filling, operate the equipment under controlled conditions and monitor temperature, noise, vibration, leakage and lubricant distribution.

Check the lubricant condition at appropriate intervals. Investigate hardening, excessive softening, oil separation, discolouration, metal particles, water contamination or unusual odour.

Relubrication intervals should be established according to equipment-manufacturer recommendations, operating temperature, load, speed, environmental contamination and service severity.

Do not mix Mobilux EP 004 with unknown grease or oil unless compatibility has been technically confirmed. Even products with the same NLGI grade may use different thickeners, base oils or additive systems.
