Description

Gulf Superfleet Supreme 15W-40 CI-4/SL Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Oil 200L

Product Description

Gulf Superfleet Supreme 15W-40 is an extra-high-performance mineral heavy-duty diesel engine oil developed for turbocharged and naturally aspirated diesel engines operating under demanding on-highway and off-highway conditions.

It provides API CI-4 diesel and API SL petrol-engine performance, making it suitable for compatible mixed fleets where the equipment manufacturer specifies these categories and an SAE 15W-40 viscosity grade.

The oil is formulated from selected mineral base stocks and an advanced additive system designed to provide soot control, wear protection, engine cleanliness, oxidation resistance, corrosion protection and effective acid neutralisation.

Gulf Superfleet Supreme is particularly suited to pre-diesel-particulate-filter diesel engines, including compatible engines equipped with Exhaust Gas Recirculation systems. EGR systems return a controlled portion of exhaust gas to the combustion chamber to reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions, but this process can increase soot loading and place additional demands on the engine oil.

The dispersant system helps keep soot particles suspended within the lubricant, reducing their tendency to combine into larger abrasive particles or contribute to excessive oil thickening. This supports oil circulation, engine cleanliness and protection of bearings, valve-train components, piston assemblies and other highly loaded surfaces.

Gulf markets Superfleet Supreme with Clean-Flow Technology. In this context, Clean-Flow Technology describes the product’s ability to control soot-related thickening, delay oxidation and help maintain internal engine cleanliness so oil can continue flowing effectively through the lubrication system.

The SAE 15W-40 viscosity grade provides dependable cold-start circulation in climates and applications where SAE 15W oil is suitable, together with SAE 40 protection at normal and elevated operating temperatures.

Its high shear stability helps the oil retain appropriate viscosity when exposed to mechanical stress within bearings, valve trains, oil pumps and turbochargers. Maintaining viscosity supports oil pressure, lubricant-film strength, control of oil consumption and component protection.

The oil has a published Total Base Number of approximately 11.0 mg KOH/g. TBN measures the lubricant’s alkaline reserve and indicates its ability to neutralise acidic combustion by-products.

This reserve is particularly valuable in diesel engines exposed to severe operation, high soot loading or fuel with elevated sulphur content. Actual oil life depends on fuel quality, operating temperature, contamination, engine condition and service interval.

Gulf Superfleet Supreme 15W-40 may be used with both low- and high-sulphur diesel where the engine manufacturer permits API CI-4 or the other published specifications. High-sulphur fuel can increase acid formation, so oil analysis and an adjusted drain interval may be necessary.

The product is suitable for compatible Euro IV engines that do not require low-SAPS oil and are not fitted with a diesel particulate filter. It is also suitable for many Euro III and earlier engines requiring the published viscosity and performance level.

This is not a low-SAPS diesel engine oil. Its typical sulfated-ash content is approximately 1.45% by mass. It must not automatically be used in engines fitted with a DPF or another after-treatment system requiring ACEA E6, E9, E11, API CJ-4, API CK-4 or another low-SAPS specification.

The 200-litre drum is intended for commercial workshops, transport fleets, agricultural operations, mining contractors, earthmoving businesses and industrial sites servicing multiple compatible engines.

Important DPF and Emissions-System Warning

Gulf Superfleet Supreme 15W-40 is a conventional high-performance API CI-4 and ACEA E7 diesel engine oil. It is not a low-SAPS formulation.

SAPS refers to sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulphur. Low-SAPS oils are designed to reduce the amount of inorganic ash and other material entering sensitive exhaust after-treatment equipment.

A diesel particulate filter traps solid particles from the exhaust. Ash created by lubricant additives cannot be burned away during normal DPF regeneration and can progressively accumulate within the filter.

Do not use Gulf Superfleet Supreme 15W-40 where the manufacturer requires:

  • API CJ-4

  • API CK-4

  • API FA-4

  • ACEA E6

  • ACEA E9

  • ACEA E11

  • A manufacturer-specific low-SAPS specification

  • A dedicated DPF-compatible oil

  • A different SAE viscosity grade

Some engines fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction but no DPF may permit ACEA E7 or API CI-4 oil. Suitability must still be confirmed from the engine manufacturer’s lubrication chart.

It is also unsuitable as a transmission, hydraulic, final-drive or wet-brake lubricant unless the equipment manufacturer specifically identifies engine oil meeting the published specification for that compartment.

Key Features and Benefits

API CI-4 Heavy-Duty Diesel Protection

API CI-4 was developed for high-speed four-stroke diesel engines, including engines using EGR technology.

The performance level addresses soot-related viscosity increase, valve-train wear, piston deposits, oxidation, corrosion and oil consumption.

It remains appropriate for many pre-DPF engines where the manufacturer specifies CI-4, CH-4, CG-4 or an earlier compatible diesel category.

A newer API category should not automatically be assumed necessary for an older engine; however, modern engines requiring CJ-4 or CK-4 need a lubricant carrying the specified performance.

Clean-Flow Technology

Gulf’s Clean-Flow Technology helps control oil thickening, keep soot dispersed and maintain engine cleanliness.

Maintaining effective oil flow is essential because contaminated or excessively thickened oil may circulate poorly during start-up and place additional load on the oil pump.

The technology supports normal lubrication but cannot correct severe fuel dilution, coolant leakage, excessive blow-by or mechanical problems.

Soot-Handling Capability

Diesel combustion produces soot, and EGR can increase the amount entering the crankcase.

The detergent and dispersant system keeps soot particles suspended until they can be removed during the oil change.

Effective soot control helps reduce abrasive wear, filter blockage and excessive viscosity increase.

Soot concentration can still exceed the lubricant’s capacity where service intervals are excessive or the engine has combustion, injector or ring-sealing problems.

Thermo-Oxidative Stability

High temperature and oxygen progressively degrade engine oil. Oxidation can cause thickening, varnish, sludge and deposits.

Gulf Superfleet Supreme provides strong thermo-oxidative stability to help retain viscosity and cleanliness during demanding service.

Operating temperature, cooling-system condition, oil capacity and engine design all affect oxidation rate.

Wear Protection

The anti-wear additive system helps protect components when the full hydrodynamic lubricant film becomes thin.

Protected components can include:

  • Crankshaft bearings

  • Connecting-rod bearings

  • Camshafts

  • Valve-train components

  • Pistons and rings

  • Cylinder surfaces

  • Timing gears

  • Oil-pump components

  • Turbocharger bearings

The lubricant cannot compensate for insufficient oil level, blocked oil passages, defective pumps or worn mechanical components.

High Shear Stability

Mechanical stress can permanently reduce an oil’s viscosity during service.

Gulf Superfleet Supreme is formulated to resist shear-related viscosity loss, helping maintain SAE 40 protection at operating temperature.

This supports oil pressure, oil-film thickness and protection of highly loaded components.

TBN Retention and Acid Control

The product’s alkaline reserve helps neutralise acidic combustion products.

Strong TBN retention is important in engines operating on high-sulphur diesel, under sustained load or with extended periods between services.

TBN should be monitored alongside viscosity, soot, oxidation, wear metals and contamination. A single test result does not provide a complete assessment of oil condition.

Engine Cleanliness

Detergent additives help control deposits on pistons, rings and other hot engine surfaces.

Dispersants keep fine contamination suspended so it can be removed during the scheduled oil and filter change.

Cleaner piston-ring grooves support ring movement, combustion sealing, oil control and compression.

Corrosion Protection

Combustion moisture and acids can attack bearings and other internal metal surfaces.

The formulation helps protect engine components against rust and corrosive wear.

Vehicles stored for extended periods may require additional preservation procedures recommended by the engine manufacturer.

Turbocharger Protection

Turbocharger shafts and bearings operate at high rotational speed and temperature.

The oil’s oxidation resistance and viscosity control help maintain lubrication and limit deposit formation in compatible turbocharged engines.

Allow the engine to warm and cool according to the manufacturer’s instructions, particularly after heavy operation.

Low- and High-Sulphur Fuel Capability

Gulf identifies the product for qualifying engines using low- or high-sulphur diesel.

Where high-sulphur fuel is used, the engine manufacturer may require a shorter oil-change interval or minimum TBN.

Fuel quality must comply with the engine manufacturer’s requirements and applicable regulations.

Mixed-Fleet Performance

The combined API CI-4/SL rating can assist fleets operating compatible diesel and petrol engines that permit SAE 15W-40.

Lubricant consolidation should only occur after checking every engine. Many modern petrol engines require a lower-viscosity oil and a newer API category.

Handling & Storage Advice

Store Gulf Superfleet Supreme 15W-40 in its original, correctly labelled 200-litre drum. Keep the drum upright, securely closed and protected in a cool, dry and well-ventilated location.

Protect the package from direct sunlight, rain, excessive heat, ignition sources, freezing conditions and physical damage.

Do not allow water, fuel, coolant, brake fluid, cleaning chemicals, dust, metal particles, used oil or other lubricants to enter the drum.

Use clean, dedicated transfer equipment. A contaminated pump, hose or dispensing container can introduce abrasive material or incompatible fluid.

The oil content weighs approximately 178 kg. The complete drum has a higher gross mass after allowing for the steel package, closures and pallet.

Mechanical handling is required. Use an approved drum trolley, drum lifter, forklift or other equipment with sufficient rated capacity.

Do not attempt to manually lift or carry a full drum. Do not lift the drum by its closures or use improvised chains, hooks or attachments.

Keep the drum stable during storage and transport. Do not drop, drag or roll it down ramps.

Store the drum within suitable bunding or secondary containment. Inspect it periodically for corrosion, leakage, damaged closures and identification labels.

Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact with new or used engine oil. Wear oil-resistant gloves, protective clothing, safety glasses and suitable footwear.

Used engine oil may contain harmful contaminants. Wash exposed skin with soap and water. Do not use petrol, solvents or abrasive cleaners on the skin.

Clean spills promptly because oil creates a serious slip hazard. Contain spilled material using appropriate absorbent and prevent it from entering drains, soil, stormwater systems or waterways.

Unused product is not classified as Dangerous Goods for road and rail transport under the referenced Australian information. It remains combustible and should be kept away from heat, sparks and flame.

Collect used oil for recycling or disposal through an authorised waste-management provider.

Consult the current Australian Safety Data Sheet before commercial or workplace use.

Directions for Use

Confirm that the engine manufacturer specifies SAE 15W-40 and API CI-4, ACEA E7 or another published Gulf Superfleet Supreme performance level.

Check whether the engine is fitted with a diesel particulate filter. Do not use this oil where a low-SAPS lubricant is required.

Warm the engine according to the manufacturer’s service procedure. Shut down and secure the vehicle or equipment before servicing.

Used oil can be extremely hot. Wear suitable protective equipment when removing the filler cap, drain plug and oil filter.

Drain the used lubricant completely into a suitable collection container. Replace the drain-plug sealing washer where required and tighten the plug to the specified torque.

Replace the oil filter using the correct part and procedure.

Transfer Gulf Superfleet Supreme from the drum using a clean, dedicated pump. Add the oil gradually through the designated filling point.

Do not rely solely on the stated sump capacity. Check the oil level using the manufacturer’s dipstick, sight glass or electronic procedure.

Start the engine and allow the oil to circulate. Check around the filter, drain plug and filler for leakage.

Switch off the engine, allow the oil to settle and recheck the level.

Do not overfill. Both insufficient and excessive oil levels can cause engine damage or operational problems.

Follow the manufacturer’s oil and filter service interval. High-sulphur fuel, severe load, dusty environments, excessive idling, fuel dilution and extreme temperatures may require more frequent oil changes.

Extended drain intervals should only be used where approved by the engine manufacturer and supported by an appropriate used-oil analysis program.

Avoid mixing the product with unknown oils. Mixing may reduce soot control, TBN reserve, viscosity stability and the overall performance level of the finished lubricant.
