Description
Product Description
Castrol HYSPIN HVI 68 is a high-viscosity-index, zinc-free hydraulic oil designed for industrial, mobile, marine and off-highway hydraulic systems operating across a wide temperature range. Key applications include excavators, earthmoving equipment, agricultural machinery, machine tools, precision hydraulic systems and other hydraulic equipment requiring ISO VG 68 high-VI hydraulic fluid with strong anti-wear performance. It is a mineral-oil-based hydraulic lubricant formulated to maintain viscosity over changing temperatures and provide reliable protection for hydraulic components.
HYSPIN HVI 68 is classified as a DIN 51502 HVLP hydraulic fluid and ISO 6743/4 Type HV. Castrol's technical information also lists requirements including DIN 51524 Part 3, Cincinnati Lamb P-68/P-69/P-70, Denison/Parker HF-0, US Steel 126 & 127 and Eaton requirements.

Typical Properties
The following values are from the Castrol HYSPIN HVI Product Data Sheet, specifically the HVI 68 column.
| Property | Test Method | Unit | Typical Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISO Viscosity Grade | — | — | 68 |
| Density @ 15°C / 59°F | ISO 12185 / ASTM D4052 | kg/m³ | 866 |
| Kinematic Viscosity @ 40°C / 104°F | ISO 3104 / ASTM D445 | mm²/s | 68 |
| Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C / 212°F | ISO 3104 / ASTM D445 | mm²/s | 10.8 |
| Viscosity Index | ISO 2909 / ASTM D2270 | — | >140 |
| Pour Point | ISO 3016 / ASTM D97 | °C / °F | -45 / -49 |
| Flash Point – Closed Cup | ISO 2719 / ASTM D93 | °C / °F | 238 / 460 |
| Foam Sequence I – Tendency / Stability | ISO 6247 / ASTM D892 | ml/ml | 20 / 0 |
| Water Separation @ 54°C | ISO 6614 / ASTM D1401 | min | 10 |
Important: There are different versions of Castrol HYSPIN HVI documentation in circulation. For example, an older Castrol PDS gives 0.87 g/ml, pour point -33°C and flash point 200°C for HVI 68, while the newer Castrol PDS gives 866 kg/m³, -45°C and 238°C. For your product datasheets, I will prioritize the latest manufacturer PDS rather than mixing values from older documents.
Key Benefits
High Viscosity Index
- Maintains more stable viscosity over changing temperatures
- Provides reliable hydraulic response during temperature fluctuations
- Helps maintain an effective lubricating film at elevated temperatures
- Supports cold-start performance
Anti-Wear Protection
HYSPIN HVI 68 is designed for hydraulic systems operating under demanding pressure and load conditions.
It helps protect:
- Hydraulic pumps
- Valves
- Hydraulic motors
- Actuators
- Bearings
- Other precision hydraulic components
Zinc-Free Technology
The HYSPIN HVI range is formulated using a zinc-free/ashless additive system, making it suitable for applications where zinc-free hydraulic technology is required or preferred.
Thermal & Oxidation Stability
The formulation provides resistance to thermal and oxidative degradation, helping maintain lubricant performance during extended operation.
Water Separation
The PDS reports 10 minutes for water separation at 54°C, supporting applications where water contamination can occur.
Foam Control
The published PDS reports 20/0 ml/ml for Foam Sequence I, indicating low foam tendency and good foam stability characteristics.
Applications
Mobile & Off-Highway Equipment
- Excavators
- Wheel loaders
- Earthmoving machinery
- Construction equipment

Castrol identifies off-highway and marine applications, as well as precision machine tools and indoor manufacturing equipment, for the HYSPIN HVI range.
Important Product Note
Castrol HYSPIN HVI 68 should not be confused with HYSPIN AWH 68 or HYSPIN AWH-M 68.
| Product | General Technology |
|---|---|
| HYSPIN HVI 68 | High-VI, zinc-free/ashless hydraulic oil |
| HYSPIN AWH 68 | High-VI hydraulic oil with viscosity-index-improving technology |
| HYSPIN AWH-M 68 | Mineral-based high-VI hydraulic oil with zinc additive technology |
The additive technology and technical performance should therefore not be assumed to be interchangeable simply because all three are ISO VG 68 hydraulic oils. Castrol separately identifies these product families.
Storage
Store in the original sealed container in a clean, dry location away from excessive heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
Keep containers tightly closed when not in use. Avoid contamination with water, dust, dirt, fuel and other lubricants.
Health & Safety
Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact and use appropriate protective gloves when handling the product.
Never check a high-pressure hydraulic leak with your hand. Hydraulic-fluid injection through the skin can cause serious injury. Depressurise hydraulic equipment before maintenance.
The Australian SDS identifies HYSPIN HVI 68 as a hydraulic fluid and provides the applicable handling and safety information.
